Dystonia - Benefits of Surgery

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for dystonia can provide a range of benefits for patients when medications, including Botox, are no longer effective. DBS may control or reduce muscle spasms, twists, and uncontrolled movements.

DBS for dystonia is approved by the FDA only under a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) while research continues into the long-term effectiveness. However, early studies show impressive results. In one study, patients six months after receiving DBS surgery showed “substantial improvement in all movement symptoms (except speech and swallowing), the level of disability, and quality of life.”

DBS is not a cure for dystonia but rather a treatment option that helps control symptoms.

The Denver DBS Center is only one of a few facilities in the nation to provide DBS for dystonia under the FDA HDE. The Denver DBS Center provides more DBS surgeries than any other Colorado DBS center and offers both traditional and asleep DBS. If you are interested in learning whether DBS might help your dystonia, we are happy to consult with you. Please call the Denver DBS Center toll-free at 855-202-9303.

All studies proving the above benefits can be found on our Research page.
